Acoustic & Drop Ceiling Contractor
Serving St. Louis, MO & the Metro East
Acoustic ceilings are a versatile and practical solution for modern construction and architecture. They are also known as dropped ceilings, false ceilings, or suspended ceilings, and are often used to hide the plenum space, which may be used for HVAC air return or to conceal piping, wiring, and ductwork.
A typical acoustic ceiling consists of a metal grid-work of channels in the shape of an upside-down “T”, suspended from the overhead structure by wires. These channels snap together in a regular pattern, typically a 2×2 or 2×4-foot grid in the US or a 600×600 mm grid in Europe. Lightweight tiles or panels are inserted into each cell of the grid, and various fixtures such as light fixtures, HVAC air grills, and fire sprinkler heads can be easily installed in the same space as a tile.
The suspended ceiling was originally developed to conceal the underside of the floor above and to offer acoustic balance and control in a room. Over the years, the acoustic performance of suspended ceilings has improved dramatically, with enhanced sound absorption and attenuation. Sound Attenuation Batts (SABs), also known as “sound batts,” are commonly added above the panels to help deaden sounds and keep adjacent rooms quieter.
